Many products around us are produced with products from the petrochemical industry, which is built on oil and gas. Many products in end user markets are based on these raw materials, and applied markets include packaging, clothing, sports, pharmaceuticals, automotive, and computers.
Steam cracking
Cracking is the process of cracking Naphtha into ethylene and propylene and other co-products. Ethylene and propylene are the basic building blocks of the petrochemical industry. Steam cracking is a technology for cracking that requires temperatures between 800 and 850 °C. Further separation is performed with distillation processes.
The steam crackers at the Geleen site are amongst the most efficient in Western Europe, due to the continuous improvement of the cracker and downstream plants.
The main feedstocks for steam crackers are Naphtha, condensate, LPG, and gas oil.
